Empower Learning.

Designed by educators, trainers, and gamers, BadgeStack is a new way of thinking about learning. BadgeStack empowers and encourages learners to master real-world skills and knowledge while engaging with peers and experts in a social give-and-take that builds community.

Individual and Community Oriented.

Individual learning and community involvement are encouraged with authentic, real-world activities combined with direct engagement with peers and experts. Along the way, users are rewarded with digital "badges" they can showcase everywhere from Facebook, to LinkedIn to blogs or resumes.

Open Ethos.

The BadgeStack system is an ideal vehicle for building learning experiences around existing open educational resources (OER) and for recognizing the informal and social learning that happens in and out of institutional settings. And the system itself is open source.

Standards Based.

BadgeStack is the first and only standards-based system designed for badge-driven social learning and is already in use by some of the world's best-known education-minded systems. We've built it with open standards at the core to make it simple for learners to showcase their badges, content experts to re-purpose their best content, and organizations to make BadgeStacking part of their community ecosystem.

So, what exactly is a badge anyway?
Badges

So, what is a badge anyway?

Think about scouting merit badges -– but in a digital form. You can take them with you for life, and even showcase on sites like LinkedIn and Facebook. A badge is a validated display of accomplishment, skill, quality, participation or interest that can be earned in any learning environment. Badges can represent traditional academic achievement or the acquisition of skills such as collaboration, teamwork, leadership, and other 21st century skills.

Badges can be earned by people of all ages, from kindergartners on up, and they can make any notable accomplishments visible to anyone and everyone, including potential employers, teachers, and peer communities. They can be earned in structured settings like classrooms, courses or seminars, or they can be awarded for learning and contributions that take place in more informal contexts, such as online communities, association gatherings, or extracurricular activities.

How it works
Where does BadgeStack™ come from?
BadgeStack comes to you from the folks at LearningTimes, who have been producing fun, community-driven online learning programs since before the turn of the century. It is a natural extension of our dedication to meaningful interaction, relationship building and authentic learning.

BadgeStack recognizes achievements that usually go unrecognized when learning happens outside of traditional venues and settings. It's rare to get official acknowledgment for the things we do every day, like: learning from or helping peers in a favorite online community, picking up or sharing new skills during an online conference or workshop, or working with others to solve real-world problems in a multiplayer online game. BadgeStack changes that.

It gives people the power to recognize the contributions of peers. Experts can recognize and vouch for the acquisition of skills by less experienced members of the community. And learners can show off evidence of their skills, value and contributions to current and future employers, friends, the world at large – and even to grandma and grandpa.
Why do we need badges?
Learning today happens everywhere, but it's often difficult to get recognition for skills and achievements gained outside of formal school programs. By displaying skills and achievements that traditional degrees and transcripts often leave out, badges can lead to jobs, community recognition, and new learning opportunities.

A digital badge is an online record of achievement, the work required, and information about the organization, individual or other entity that issued the badge. Badges can be earned in any learning environment, and signal either traditional academic achievements or can include skills such as collaboration, teamwork, networking and more.

Once earned, they can be carried with the learner and displayed (hence "digital") on social networks, resumes, blogs, and websites; essentially any digital display avenue, allowing potential employers, teachers and peers to view them.

Any organization or community can issue badges (for example, an after-school program, free online course, or a museum association) backed by their own seal of approval. Learners can then collect badges from different sources and display them across the web -- on their resume, web site, social networking profiles, job sites or just about anywhere.

LearningTimes is not alone as an advocate for badge-based learning. The US Department of Education recently joined the MacArthur Foundation and Mozilla to call for groups worldwide to create and implement badging systems to recognize skills and knowledge gained outside of traditional settings.
Can badge earners share their badges outside of BadgeStack?
Absolutely. There is built-in support for social networking sites like LinkedIn and Facebook, a quick embed function for sharing badges virtually anywhere online, and full integration with the new Mozilla Open Badge Backpack.

Can organizations receive badges?
Yes. We are working with associations and organizations to develop organizational level badges. For example, companies are keen to showcase to current and potential customers how they are complying with green standards in their industry, state, country and at international levels of requirements. Contact us today to learn more about our organizational level badge work.
What does it cost?
We offer a variety of pricing options for building badge-based learning programs. For some, a self-serve model is preferred. For others, a custom model is preferred and we provide detailed estimates based on project scope that can include elements such as instructional design, rich media development, production, project management, and platform licensing. Call us today so we can learn more about your needs.
Can I get a demo?
Absolutely. Just contact us and we'll be pleased to walk you through the system and get you a demo account if you'd like.
Is BadgeStack Open Source?
Yes, the BadgeStack system operates under the same GNU General Public License that governs WordPress (GPLv2 or later).
Is BadgeStack Mozilla Open Badge compliant?
Yes! BadgeStack is the only learning system built from the ground up to integrate with the new Open Badge Infrastructure (OBI) standard created by the Mozilla Foundation. If enabled by your organization, learners can choose to have their badges sent to the Mozilla Open Badge Backpack, where their badges can be grouped and syndicated anywhere they choose on the Web.
Can I download the BadgeStack system and run it on my own server?
BadgeStack is currently available on a Software as a Service (SaaS) basis, hosted by LearningTimes. We provide full access to the system to your organization, complete customizability, and options for custom functions, themes and plugins to the core architecture.

We are working with an advisory group of education, museum, library and other non-profit groups to rapidly extend the core feature set and customization options. As part of the "BadgeStack Project" we intend to release a downloadable version of BadgeStack. If you'd like to be notified of its release or be part of the BadgeStack Project advisory or beta groups, contact us at project@badgestack.org.
Can BadgeStack be customized to meet the needs of my organization?
You bet! From the colors and logo to the visual identity of your badges to the vocabulary you use on the site for core functions, badges and concepts – everything can be dynamically customized. And when it comes to the rules that govern the earning of badges, whether and how community members level up, and which badges can be shared with the outside world – all of those decisions are in your hands. We also offer the option of creating a completely unique community design just your organization. The BadgeStack architecture also allows for extending the system with specialized functionality just for your needs.
Can I integrate it with my existing learning management system?
Yes. BadgeStack currently offers optional single sign-on (SSO) support for IMS Global Learning Consortium bLTI interoperability. Seamlessly integrate your bLTI-enabled platforms with BadgeStack and let the account management handle itself.
